OCTOBER
This Month's Concerns
• Seasonal Fungal Diseases: Brown Patch and continuing presence of Take All Root Rot in St. Augustine & Zoysia Environmental Notes: Cool nights and longer dew periods create ideal Brown Patch conditions. Residual issues from drainage problems that accumulated over the wet season
• Insects: Chinch bugs persist in warm spots;
webworms/armyworms may surge with cooler nights; Tuttle mealybugs remain active in Zoysia.
• Palms: Potassium, Magnesium, and Manganese deficiencies in low capacity soils and high-runoff areas
What to Look Out For:
• Brown Patch: circular yellow/brown spots.
• Take-All Root Rot: fluorescent yellow thinning turf.
•
Webworms/armyworms/moths: chewed blades/moths in grass
• Tuttle mealybug: stunted Zoysia blotches (yellow/brown).
• Palms: frizzled new growth or tip-yellowing older leaves (K, Mg, Mn deficiencies).
Suggested Actions
• Inspect lawns for disease and insect activity
• Spot-treat weeds and turf diseases
• Possible palm tree nutrient amendments
• If you haven't scalped Zoysia to manage Tuttle mealybug, it's too late. Plan your next scalp in March.
Adjust irrigation for shorter days and differing weather patterns

Why Now?
• Cool nights + dew favor Brown Patch.
• Humidity and soil stress fuel Take-All Root Rot.
• Webworms/armyworms thrive in October temps.
• Summer leaching still affecting palms-key time for fertilization.
• Limited chemical efficacy and thatch layer buildup without being removed fuels tuttle mealybugs in Zoysia
